Once we reach our 40s, something quietly changes. Not all at once, but gradually — in the way our skin feels, in how quickly we bounce back from a long walk or late night. That change is, in part, collagen.

Collagen is the protein that gives our skin its plumpness, our hair its strength, our nails their resilience, and our joints their ease. From our early twenties, our natural collagen production begins to slow — and by the time we reach 40, it’s estimated we lose about 1% per year.

But there’s good news: supplementing with collagen can help replenish what time takes away — and it doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it can become one of the simplest rituals in your day.

The Benefits of Collagen After 40

Research and anecdotal evidence alike point to the many ways collagen can support us as we age:

  • Skin: Increased hydration, improved elasticity, and a softening of fine lines
  • Hair: Strengthens strands and supports new growth
  • Nails: Reduces brittleness and promotes healthy growth
  • Joints: May ease stiffness and improve mobility
  • Bones: Supports bone density — a key consideration post-40
  • Gut Health: Certain types of collagen can help soothe and support the digestive tract

The Different Types of Collagen

Collagen isn’t one-size-fits-all. There are at least 28 types, but here are the three most commonly used in supplements:

  • Type I – The most abundant in the body. Supports skin, bones, and tendons.
  • Type II – Found in cartilage. Excellent for joint support.
  • Type III – Works alongside Type I, especially for skin, blood vessels, and internal organs.

Some blends contain all three, while others target specific concerns (like joint or beauty blends). Most are derived from:

  • Bovine (cow) – Rich in Types I & III; great for skin, hair, nails, and general wellbeing
  • Marine (fish) – Smaller particles, highly absorbable; ideal for skin and beauty-focused blends
  • Chicken – Often Type II; best for joint health and cartilage support
  • Vegan collagen boosters – Not actual collagen, but plant-based nutrients that help stimulate your own production (think: silica, vitamin C, and amino acids)

How to Add Collagen to Your Life

The key to collagen is consistency — and choosing a method that fits into your life with ease:

  • Powder: Mix into coffee, tea, smoothies, oats, protein balls, or even soups. Look for unflavoured varieties for flexibility.
  • Capsules: Ideal for travel or if you prefer a no-fuss approach.
  • Liquids: Some are beautifully flavoured and easy to sip — no prep required.
  • Gummies: A fun, fuss-free option (check the sugar content if that’s a concern).

My tip: I stir a flavourless bovine collagen powder into my peppermint tea at night or protein shake at 3pm — it dissolves instantly, and I barely notice it’s there. One small habit, quietly working behind the scenes.

What to Look For in a Collagen Supplement

  • Hydrolysed or “peptides” – Means the collagen is broken down for easier absorption
  • Minimal ingredients – No fillers, added sugars, or artificial flavours
  • Third-party tested – Ensures purity and quality
  • Vitamin C – Essential for collagen synthesis (look for blends that include it or take separately)

Collagen isn’t a miracle. It’s a support that helps us feel more like ourselves (my eyebrows actually grew back!). And in a world that shouts about youth, choosing to nourish yourself quietly and meaningfully feels like an act of beauty in its own right.
