The Best Towns to Visit in Provence for Slow, Beautiful Travel (Part II)

French Consul visit Provence Aix en Provence

Let’s head to the seaside! In Part II, this region of Provence blends the coast with culture — perfect for long lunches, salt-dusted walks, and wandering with no agenda at all.

Aix-en-Provence

Elegant, sun-dappled, and full of quiet grandeur.

The heart of Aix beats to the rhythm of its fountains — over 1,000 of them, scattered across golden-hued squares and boulevards lined with plane trees. Cezanne’s hometown is refined but warm, with markets almost every day, beautiful bookshops, and sunlit terraces where time seems to pause.

Don’t miss: The Saturday market at Place des Prêcheurs, the endless boutique shopping and a visit to Cezanne’s atelier.

French Consul visit Provence Cassis

Cassis

Where the sea meets soft pastels and rosé afternoons.

Cassis is everything a Mediterranean village should be — fishing boats bobbing in the harbour, faded pink facades, and seafood lunches that stretch into late afternoon. It’s perfect for a day of swimming, market strolling, or boarding a boat to the famous calanques.

Don’t miss: The morning market, a water-side stroll, and watching the world go by from the local eateries.

Some towns are quiet. Some are lively. All are beautiful in that particular way the French do so well.

La Ciotat

A hidden coastal gem with vintage soul and Provençal ease.

Just beyond Cassis, La Ciotat is quietly captivating. Once an old shipbuilding hub, today it’s all faded shutters, curved beaches, Sunday brocantes, and a soft rhythm that feels beautifully unhurried. It’s also the birthplace of cinema — the Lumière brothers screened the very first film here.

Don’t miss: A walk along the Vieux Port with sorbet in hand and a vintage treasure hunt at the brocante.
