As Seen in Country Style: Our French-Inspired Mudroom

When we designed the mudroom at Petit Château, we wanted a space that was as functional as it was beautiful — a welcoming point of arrival that could hide the everyday clutter while still feeling charming and considered.

Recently featured in the July 2025 issue of Country Style magazine, our mudroom combines soft heritage tones, practical storage, and those little French-inspired details that make all the difference.

From the vintage wall sconce sourced in Paris to the woven baskets that keep everything in order, and our very own French Consul Septembre Tote hanging by the door, here’s where to find each piece that brings this space to life.

Sourcebook

Paint: Porter’s Paints Hailstorm half strength created this beautiful almost Tiffany/French blue feature wall to which we added some simple molding. The colour is forever changing in the natural light, almost reading green at times. Dulux Fair Bianca paint was used throughout the cottage for walls, ceilings, architraves, windows and skirts. It’s my favourite white paint – soft, warm, but not yellow.

Joinery: Bench seat by Merritt Joinery, also painted in Dulux Fair Bianca.

Styling: White ceramic and gold Vintage Hooks; Do Up Shop, Etsy; C19th Wall Sconce, Paris; Brush, Evandale Village Store, Tasmania; Market basket, Provence; Kubu Baskets in Large, Provincial Home Living.

Septembre Tote 100% linen made with French flax and handcrafted in Ireland with white grain sack stripe by French Consul – bien sur!

It was important to me to layer French Provincial antiques throughout the cottage for that special but lived-in feel.

Floors: polished satin-finish concrete. It’s both a practical and elegant flooring finish that works so well for a country home. The concrete also contrasts beautifully to the rough-sawn floorboards in the original cottage – delineating old from new in the extension.

The image below shows the mudroom entrance. I love that our friends and neighbours, even the postman, all knock at this side door.
